Our Story

At the PVJ Literacy Foundation, we believe literacy is the cornerstone of opportunity. It is the gateway through which students discover their potential, pursue their dreams, and build brighter futures.

The Foundation was founded on a simple belief: every student deserves the opportunity to succeed through education. While pursuing his legal education, Founder and Vice Chair, Patrick V. Johnson II reflected on the profound impact that literacy, strong mentors, and quality education had on his own life. He also realized that too many students in our communities face barriers to those same opportunities.

That vision took root long before the Foundation existed. Raised in a family of educators, Patrick saw firsthand the lasting impact teachers, mentors, and community leaders can have on a young person’s life. Those values grew stronger at Texas A&M University, where he met Narius Nedd. Together, they served as Maroon Coats for the Texas A&M Foundation, one of the nation’s largest philanthropic organizations, where they learned the power of investing in people and communities.

That experience shaped a lifelong commitment to educational equity through literacy initiatives, academic scholarships, mentorship opportunities, and community partnerships. We provide students with the resources and opportunities they need to learn, lead, and thrive.

Our story is still being written, and every volunteer, donor, educator and community partner helps shape what comes next. Together, we are opening doors, expanding opportunity, and empowering the next generation to thrive, one reader at a time.

Our Mission & Values

Our Mission

Our mission is to advance literacy and expand educational opportunity for students in our communities through books, scholarships, and mentorship so every student has the opportunity to learn, lead, and thrive.

Our Values

Literacy — We believe literacy is the foundation for learning, confidence, and lifelong growth. Reading opens doors, sparks curiosity, and gives students the tools to imagine a future far bigger than their circumstances.

OpportunityWe believe opportunity should never depend on where a student comes from. Every student deserves the chance to learn, grow, and pursue a future shaped by their own potential.

Community — We believe lasting change happens when we invest directly in the people around us, through intentional relationships, mentorships, and consistent presence — not just resources. Strong communities are built one student, one family, and one relationship at a time.
